I'm currently responsible for running the Core Bioinformatics Unit at the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research (CIMR), part of the School of Medicine of the University of Cambridge.

My background is on Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology. During my engineering degree I worked as a bioinformatics research assistant for different laboratories in Chile. My engineering thesis was a 1 year research project on mathematical modelling of metabolism and related gene regulation in E. coli.

After my engineering degree I worked (2004-2008) as a bioinformatician on a Microbial Bioinformatics lab, where we had a join University - Industry (copper mining) project on the genomics of iron-oxidation bacterial species. During the last part of this project, I was appointed technical coordinator of a systems biology initiative within the same partnership.

From 2008 to 2012 I pursued my PhD in Bioinformatics at the prestigious European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) in Hinxton, Cambridge, under the direction of Dr. Cristoph Steinbeck. After a post-doc with Dr. Steinbeck in 2013, I took my current appointment at CIMR.
