Dr. Julia Ponomarenko is the Head of the Bioinformatics Unit at the Centre for Genomic Regulation, Barcelona, Spain. After getting in 2002 the PhD in computational biology, Julia moved to the San Diego Supercomputer Center of the University of California San Diego (UCSD), USA, where until 2015 she had served as the NIH Principal Investigator. Dr. Ponomarenko is one of the primary developers of the Immune Epitope Database (IEDB.org), a $35M NIAID/NIH contract. In 2014, she received the US National Science Foundation RAPID award for studies on the immunity against the Ebola virus. Dr. Ponomarenko’s research interests include immunoinformatics, structural genomics, transcriptomics, systems biology, biological databases and development of bioinformatics software. In 2006-2015, Julia had mentored students and taught graduate bioinformatics courses at UCSD; she organized and directed the Bioinformatics course for the UCSD PhD program in Biomedical Sciences and the course “Immunoinformatics for Biotech and Pharmaceutical Industry Professionals” at UCSD Extension. During these years, Julia had mentored high school students for Science Olympiads and for the UCSD summer computational program. For her contribution into this program, in 2013, she was awarded the UCSD Certificate of Excellence. Dr. Ponomarenko is an editor for the journals ISRN Bioinformatics and “Frontiers in Immunotherapies and Vaccines” and served on the grant review panels for the US National Science Foundation and grant agencies of New Zealand, Israel, Belgium and other.
